Collieries

Durham County in the north-east of England is dotted with villages, most of which grew up around a coal mine. What appealed to me was the situation of these villages; some clinging to hillsides, others in steep valleys, all of them in places which, had there been no mine, would have been the most unlikely spots imaginable. The villages in the paintings, which are all inventions, are intended to convey this sense of improbability.
